Mike Maddux has experienced a lot of success as a pitching coach over his career. But even his advice couldn’t save the Los Angeles Angels.

Maddux — as well as assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti — was reportedly fired by the Angels on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Los Angeles Angels fired pitched coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti, sources tell ESPN. Maddux joined them in the offseason and was working on a one-year contract. Angels pitchers have a 4.53 ERA and the most walks in MLB.

Maddux, who took a one-year deal with the team in the offseason, was just a few months into that contract before being let go. The move comes a day after the Angels’ bullpen gave up three runs in extra innings during a 4-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Monday.

The Angels are mired in yet another miserable season. With the team sitting at 45-74 entering play Tuesday, the front office apparently decided Maddux’s approach wasn’t working and that he didn’t need to stick around for the rest of his deal.

Entering play Tuesday, Angels pitching ranks 24th in MLB with a 4.53 ERA. The team’s pitching staff has also allowed the most walks in baseball and has thrown 48 wild pitches, third-most in the majors.

Prior to joining the Angels, Maddux — who is the older brother of Hall of Fame pitcher Greg — had two separate stints as the Texas Rangers’ pitching coach. In between those stints, he also served in that position with the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals.

In his second go-around with the Rangers, Maddux helped the team win the 2023 World Series. While the team’s bullpen wasn’t great in the regular season, its starters ranked seventh in ERA that year.

Given his reputation and previous experiences, Maddux could receive interest from teams during the offseason.
