The Los Angeles Angels had a chance to post a rare series win on the road against the Miami Marlins, but starter Grayson Rodriguez struggled again as his roller-coaster ride of a season continued in this 12-3 loss.
Things got off to a wild start with both teams scoring in the first inning, which featured all sorts of unusual action. Zach Neto singled home Nolan Schanuel to get the Angels on the board, and the hit featured a controversial tag play at the plate that the Marlins challented and lost.
The Marlins half of the inning was just as wild, literally. The first Miami run scored on a wild pitch by Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez, with yet another tag play where the Halos challenged and lost. Otto Lopez then delivered an infield hit, and a throwing error by Nolan Schanuel allowed the second run to score. A single by Owen Caissie got another run home to put the Angels down 3-1.
Rodriguez wound up throwing 35 pitches in the inning, which put the oft-combustible bullpen on high alert. But the Angels got a run back in the third via a home run from Jose Siri to cut Miami’s lead to 3-2.
The Marlins added a run in the fourth, and they broke the game open in the fifth off reliever Shaun Anderson when Grayson left the game. Rodriguez submitted yet another ugly line that featured four runs, with three earned, to go with four hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.
Anderson took Rodriguez’s version of awful and raised him to horrendous as he gave up six runs in the fifth. The highlights included a two-run homer from Griffin Conine, with Javier Sanoja driving in three runs in the inning with a pair of singles.
That put the game away, as the Marlins used a series of relievers to mostly shut down the Halos the rest of the way. Starter Ryan Gusto only lasted four frames for Miami with Michael Peterson getting the win, while the Angels wound up with catcher Tyler Heineman posting one of the better pitching performances of the day.
The Halos now head home for four games against the Texas Rangers, who are engaged in a nip-and-tuck battle with the Houston Astros to try and win the worst division in baseball. Reid Detmers will take the mound against McKenzie Gore as the Angels try to rebound from their latest disaster.
