Midfielder Maiara Niehues scored a game-winning penalty kick in the second half of Angel City FC’s 2-0 win over the Chicago Stars on Saturday. The win marked Angel City’s third straight victory this season and extended Niehues’s own club-record scoring streak to five consecutive games.

Angel City also set a club record with its third straight clean sheet. Additionally, 21-year-old Niehues is the second-youngest player in NWSL history to score in five consecutive games.

“Niehues is a goal scorer,” Angel City head coach Leif Smerud said, per the team’s official website. “As soon as the ball is inside the box and she can shoot it or head it, she is really dangerous, and that’s invaluable to have in a team. And she’s a great penalty taker as well, as she showed.”

Niehues leads Angel City with six total goals this season. Meanwhile, forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir, who scored the second goal of Saturday’s game, ranks second on the team with five.

What’s Next for Angel City?

Angel City will return to BMO Stadium for a game against Racing Louisville on July 26 at 6 p.m. PT. This game will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

The team has 16 regular season games remaining, with the final match set for Nov. 1 against Boston Legacy.

Angel City is in the middle of a tight playoff race and currently ranks seventh in the NWSL with 22 points. North Carolina Courage and Orlando Pride trail closely behind with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Only the top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, so it is crucial Angel City continues to win games this season.
