A Massachusetts native will be donning the Stars and Stripes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.
Arlington native and FC Cincinnati center back Miles Robinson was named to the United States Men’s National Team 26-man squad for the World Cup on Tuesday, May 26 by manager Mauricio Pochettino, as unveiled via multiple social media platforms.
Robinson, who will become the first Massachusetts man to represent the US in a World Cup since Attleboro native Geoff Cameron in 2014, has made 38 appearances for the Americans. He’s also scored on three occasions, including the lone goal against rivals Mexico to win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Born and raised in Arlington, Robinson was a two-sport standout growing up, excelling in both soccer and basketball. While his club team, FC Greater Boston Bolts, wouldn’t allow him to play high school soccer, the 2015 Arlington High graduate was a force on the court for the Spy Ponders.
Named the 2013-14 Middlesex League Co-MVP as a junior, Robinson led the way for Arlington in nearly every key statistical category as a senior, putting up 30 points, including a pair of dunks, and 14 rebounds in a game against Melrose. Robinson led the Spy Ponders to the the 2015 MIAA Division 2 North finals before narrowly falling 50-47 to eventual D2 champions Danvers.
After Arlington, Robinson moved on to playing soccer at Syracuse University, where his older sister and former Spy Ponder track standout Rebecca was already attending and competing as a sprinter. On the pitch for the Orange, the younger Robinson continued to grow his game, being named the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association NCAA Division 1 Men's All-American. He elected to leave Syracuse after his junior season and was selected second overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by then-expansion club Atlanta United FC.
After spending the 2017 season on loan with the Charleston Battery of the USL, Robinson played six seasons in Atlanta, recording 4 goals in 150 appearances while winning the 2018 MLS Cup and 2019 US Open Cup. In 2019, Robinson made his USMNT senior debut against Mexico. He was in consideration for the Americans at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but suffered a ruptured Achilles during an MLS match against Chicago Fire on May 7, 2022 that saw him miss both the tournament and the remainder of the MLS season.
Robinson is the second Massachusetts native to be named to a World Cup squad this month, following former Melrose High two-sport standout Frantzdy Pierrot being named to Haiti's 26-man squad on Friday, May 15.
Unfortunately Robinson and the rest of the USMNT most likely will not be making an appearance in Foxboro during the World Cup, but it could happen. The Americans three Group D matchups will take place on the West Coast, including a pair of matches at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium). If the USMNT finishes third in Group D, then it could potentially play at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) during the knockout stages, firstly in the Round of 32 against the winner of Group E on June 29 and then, if the Americans advance to the quarterfinals, again on July 9.
However, the USMNT could also finish third in Group D and advance to the knockouts but instead be drawn with the winner of Group I in the Round of 32 at New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) depending on how qualification results play out. If the Americans finish second in Group D, the team could still feature at Boston Stadium in the quarterfinals if it was to advance that far. If the USMNT wins Group D or finishes last, there is no possibility of seeing Robinson play in his home state this summer.
