Aug. 1—PAYNESVILLE — The New London-Spicer Twins earned the County Line League championship Friday night with an 8-7 victory over Starbuck.
NLS scored five runs in the top of the first inning. By the fifth inning, Starbuck tied it up at 6-6. But the Twins came up with two runs in the seventh, then held on for the win.
Hunter Magnuson went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs and Jett Salonek was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and three RBIs for the Twins.
Jordan Ellingson got the win on the mound, going 4- 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed one hit and one run, striking out eight and walking six.
Dylan Alexander was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Austin Ver Steeg went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two runs and an RBI for the Stars. Jackson Hendrickson homered and drove in three runs for Starbuck.
The game was played in Paynesville because of the state Division II American Legion baseball tournament, which is being played this weekend at Marthaler Field in Glenwood.
Both NLS and Starbuck advance to the Region 8C tournament in Regal. NLS plays an opponent to be determined at 6 p.m. Friday. Starbuck plays Elrosa at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8.
