The Saints have restructured Alvin Kamara’s contract. Here’s why this is good news for Kamara’s fantasy value and not-so-good news for Travis Etienne’s value.
Kamara’s 2026 status remained up in the air as recently as last week. Etienne’s arrival signaled that Kamara’s days as New Orleans’ #1 RB were over. His fantasy average draft position (ADP) sat outside the top 50 running backs. He was on the fringe of draftability.
Had the Saints traded him, their backfield would have been one of the top-heavy in the league. The often-injured Kendre Miller and low-ceiling Devin Neal would have battled to back up Etienne, who would have been in line for 300+ touches as an unquestioned three-down back.
Instead, Kamara’s role in this backfield is now mostly assured. Going on 31 years old, surely he can no longer be viewed as a rival to Etienne. But as a passing-down RB with terrific hands? Absolutely. Few in the NFL have been better. He caught 33 of 39 targets in 11 games last season. He maintains an above-average broken-tackle rate. He doesn’t need more than 100 touches to crack the top 50.
Yet his ADP is only RB53. That doesn’t make sense unless we believe he’ll break down midseason or lose the #2 job to someone like Miller. I’d rather bet on him at that price point. In a realistic worst-case scenario, he’ll finish around 45-50. In a realistic best-case scenario, he’ll earn around eight touches a game and crack the top 36. Either way, he’s now a bargain, while Etienne (RB18 ADP) is no longer guaranteed a bell cow workload.
