Red Gerard and Hailey Langland are an Olympic power couple who share more than just the same sport.
Ahead of Gerard and Langland making their Olympic debuts at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, they started dating.
The couple's relationship began as a strong friendship. The pair met as kids while part of the same competitive training group, the Burton snowboarding team. Despite the fact that they lived on opposite sides of the country — Langland grew up in California while Gerard and his family lived in Colorado — they developed a close bond.
“We became best friends for years,” Langland told ESPNin 2022.
The couple competed together again during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Although the 2026 Games were supposed to be an Olympic hat-trick for the pair, Langland suffered two ACL tears just months before the Milano-Cortina Games and was forced to sit them out due to her ongoing recovery. Still, she traveled to Italy to cheer Gerard on from the sidelines.
“I think the biggest person I lean on is my girlfriend, Hailey, for sure,” Gerard told Summit Dailyin December 2025. “She helps me get through a lot of things.”

Years before they sparked a romance, Langland and Gerard were close friends. In a 2017 interview with Pyramid Magazine, then-16-year-old Langland said “Red is a true homie” and gushed about her admiration for his style on the slopes.
The pair first met at the age of 12 when they were attending a snowboarding camp in Mount Hood, Ore. They were both members of the Burton training team and, according to Langland, their team manager gave Gerard her phone number.
“He started text[ing] me funny messages,” she told ESPN, adding that they became “best friends” soon after.
According to Langland's mom, Michelle, it was obvious that the two were meant to be more than just friends. “I knew he took to her and was fond of her and he liked to make her laugh,” she told ESPN. “I remember telling her, ‘You’re going to end up dating that guy.’ I could see it.”
They’ve been dating since 2018

After five years of friendship, the pair started dating, just weeks before competing together in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“When we were 17, it just sorta happened,” Langland explained to ESPN. “I think everyone but me saw it. I’d say, ‘No, we're too young. We're too good of friends.’ But it made sense. Even though we spend every single day together, I don't think we get tired of one another. He's my favorite person to be around.”
Since then, the two have been inseparable. They live together in California with their dog and travel the world for professional competitions and events.
“It’s a super cliché story, but it's our story,” Langland said.
They are both Olympians

Gerard and Langland are both professional, Olympic-level snowboarders. They both made their Olympic debuts at the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang.
The couple returned four years later to compete together at the Winter Games in Beijing. This year, both Langland and Gerard are in Italy for the Olympics, but only Gerard is competing. While Langland was supposed to, she suffered two ACL tears and was forced to sit out due to her injuries.
“That was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make for myself,” she told Elite Dailyin January 2026. “But above all, from this whole process, I’ve learned my body is so, so important to me.”
In order to ensure a full recovery, she opted to give herself a break from the sport, effectively taking herself out of the running for Milan. “This is the first Olympics I’ve missed since I started competing in the Olympics,” she said, calling it “super hard.”
They are supportive of one another

Langland might not be competing at this year’s Olympics, but she’s in Milan cheering Gerard on from the sidelines.
Throughout their relationship, the couple have continued to show up for one another, on and off the slopes.
“We influence each other for sure. We pick and pull from each other when we need it,” Langland told ESPN. “It's a good balance. We've figured out what works for ourselves and what works for each other.”
Gerard has shared similar sentiments over the years. Speaking to Olympics.com in 2022, he noted that Langland helps him stay calm when he’s under pressure. “To snowboard with your girlfriend, your best friend, both of us push each other in really good ways. She’s a lot more mellow, I have a lot more anxiety," he said.
Langland and Gerard have also spoken about how much they love spending time together.
“Red is my best friend. He’s so fun to be around, and he always pushes me to be a better person and snowboarder,” Langland said in a January 2025 interview with Athleisure.
Gerard feels the same way, noting how “awesome” it is to get to travel the world and compete with Langland. “I've been so incredibly lucky to have her by my side at contests. I'm with her 320 days a year, and I am so lucky for it,” he told ESPN.
