On Sunday, Alexander Zverev's patience and resolve were finally rewarded.
After over a decade of play at the highest level of tennis, the third-ranked men's tennis player in the world finally captured his first-ever Grand Slam title after winning the 2026 French Open. For the 27-year-old Zverev, after being forced to withdraw from the 2022 French Open semifinal due to injury and losing the 2025 Australian Open final, this moment of glory understandably felt long overdue.
During one of his post-match interviews on TNT, Zverev took the opportunity to jab at one of his critics.
When former tennis player Sam Querrey, whose best finish at a Grand Slam was "only" getting to the quarterfinals of the 2017 U.S. Open, asked what Zverev was feeling in the moment as he realized he had won in the French Open, Zverev wasted no time roasting him. He jokingly picked apart Querrey's credentials to interview him now as someone who never won a Grand Slam, asking Querrey, "Why are you here?"
Then, when Zverev finally began to entertain Querrey's question, he noted he was happy to be holding the Coupe des Mousquetaires (the name of the trophy given to the men's singles winner at the French Open) because Querrey said he never would. Oh, man, PHEW!
There's dunking on someone you might consider one of your biggest haters, then there's throwing down an absolute tomahawk slam while sitting at the peak of your career. Even if it was ultimately in jest, that's exactly what Zverev did to Querrey here.
