After being down a set and a break in his previous match, Carlos Alcaraz came out with much more vigor and urgency from the start Wednesday.

He jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set against No. 13 seed Casper Ruud. And though Ruud showed his meddle in the second set forcing a tiebreaker, the result was a straight-set win for the world's No. 1 player.

Alcaraz took down Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2) to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal.

It was a much different match than Alcaraz faced in the previous when he rallied from down a set and a break to beat Arthur Rinderknech on Monday night.

After a first-set blitz, Ruud pushed Wednesday's second set to a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker, though, was all Alcaraz. With Alcaraz leading 6-1, Ruud gave the crowd something to smile at when he did an unnecessary between-the-legs shot and ended up winning the point, which drew a big grin from Alcaraz who ended the match one point later.

Alcaraz is searching for his third Indian Wells title in four years having taking the crown in 2023 and 2024. He'll be facing another former champion here in Thursday's quarterfinal when he faces Cam Norrie.
