The New York Jets did well to get quarterback Geno Smith back in the building as they did.
The team desperately needed a stabilizing force at the position, if only for a season. Even if Smith has tapered out a bit from his career renaissance, he can still do the job at a competent-enough level.
However, Jets coach Aaron Glenn is projecting more than decent quarterback play from Smith. He's already talking about a Super Bowl.
Per SNY Jets, Glenn said that he believes Smith is going to lead the Jets "to the promised land."
Yes, he really said that. He really said Smith will lead New York to a Lombardi.
Look, we're not trying to be pessimistic here or burst Glenn's bubble, but the odds of Smith leading the Jets to a Super Bowl are as long as any team's in the NFL.
The Jets are in the middle of a rebuild, and we imagine the team has its eyes on that ballyhooed 2027 quarterback class. Smith is likely just a reasonable placeholder for 2026 and maybe 2027 if New York wants its future rookie to sit on the bench for a year and learn behind a veteran who can do some mentoring.
Glenn might be on the hot seat if the Jets can't show at least some improvement from 2026. Perhaps that's why he's so bullish on Smith. Maybe he felt the same way about Justin Fields last year, and hope just springs eternal for him at the quarterback position. Either way, that's a bold stance to take on Smith and the Jets if you ask us.
