A trio of legendary former Auburn Tigers have the opportunity to have their great careers celebrated.
On Monday, it was announced that Cam Newton, Ed King, and Tommy Tuberville were selected to the ballot for the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame. The voting for this year's Hall of Fame class will conclude on July 1.
Newton only spent one season on campus at Auburn, but it was one of the great seasons in college football history. Auburn fans will always remember the 2010 season when Newton led the Tigers to their first national championship since 1958. (Auburn has recently claimed championships for the 1983, 1993, and 2004 seasons). That season Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns, with an additional 1,473 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Those numbers and Auburn's undefeated season resulted in Newton becoming the school's third Heisman Trophy winner.
He would be the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, and was the only player from the Auburn offense to play in the NFL. He spent 11 seasons in the NFL with the Panthers and the New England Patriots. His best season was in 2015, when he won league MVP and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. However, they were defeated by the Denver Broncos.
Playing for the Tigers from 1988-1990, King was a two-time First-team All-SEC and a two-time All-American (1989, 1990). He is one of the best offensive linemen in the history of the program, where he played as a guard for the Tigers. He was part of two SEC Championship teams in 1988 and 1989 that won ten games in back-to-back seasons. Auburn has not accomplished that feat since then. King would then go on to play professional football for ten seasons before retiring in 2021. He would play in the NFL, NFL Europe, CFL, and the original XFL. Most of his NFL career was spent playing for the Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints.
Tuberville is one of the nine coaches who were announced for the ballot. He coached the Tigers for ten seasons from 1999-2008, posting an overall record of 85-40. The most successful season under Tuberville's leadership was in 2004, when the Tigers finished the season 13-0, but were denied the opportunity by the BCS to play for a championship. That team was led by one of the great backfields with Jason Campbell at quarterback, along with Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Ronnie Brown.
Another highlight of Tuberville's tenure at Auburn was his success against Alabama. He was 7-3 versus the Crimson Tide and won six straight from 2002-07. After he left the program following the 2008 season, he went on to coach both Texas Tech and Cincinnati with moderate success.
