On Friday afternoon, former New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Andrus Peat officially announced his retirement from the NFL. Peat did so on his official Instagram account, beginning with ''11 years in the league, I gave it everything I had. I may be walking away from football, but not from the lessons it taught me'.' Peat, 32, last played six games and made three starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2025 season.
Andrus Peat began his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent nine of his eleven seasons. A two-time All-Pac-12 selection with the Stanford Cardinal, Peat was the 13th choice in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Saints. As a rookie, Peat was expected to win a starting job at offensive tackle. He failed to overtake incumbent Zach Strief on the right side and did not play well as an injury replacement for Terron Armstead at left tackle. Peat did appear in 12 games in 2015, making eight starts with a few inside at guard.
In 2016, Peat began the year as the starter at left guard. He'd move out to tackle to replace an injured Armstead for a few games, starting all of his 15 game appearances. By 2017, it was clear Peat had found a home at the left guard spot. Though he did have some injury issues, he'd start 66 games over a five-year stretch and made three consecutive Pro Bowls between 2018 and 2020.
A torn pectoral limited Peat to only six contests during the 2021 campaign. He'd return in 2022 to start 11 games at his familiar guard spot. Heading into 2023, Peat was relegated to backup duties. However, ineffective play in front of him forced the Saints to elevate him to a starter at left tackle. Despite not playing well outside at the beginning of his career, Peat played solid there that season as a 12-game starter.
After having his contract extended twice during his nine years with the Saints, Peat was allowed to hit free agency during the 2024 offseason. He signed with the Raiders, where he played 15 games as mostly a reserve before signing with the Steelers in 2025.
Some will view Andrus Peat as a first-round draft bust with the Saints. While he looked that early on, Peat rebounded to put together a solid career at guard, where he was one of the league's better interior blockers for a stint. Andrus Peat played 111 games with New Orleans, making 102 starts and was part of one of the NFL's better offensive lines during a five-year stretch.
