A great way to size up a team's chances of winning it all is to look at their roster and see how many top-tier players are on it. Attrition is often one of the biggest factors when it comes to determining team's ultimate success, but having a talented roster is always going to be the initial requirement for winning. Do the Dallas Cowboys qualify as such?
In a recent exercise on NFL.com, analyst Chad Reuter took a stab at an All-NFL redraft based on putting each club in win-now mode. Through seven rounds in the same draft order used as the basis for April's amateur draft, he assigned players to all 32 teams in an effort to identify the best talent heading into the 2026 season. Positional value was important — QBs took the first 12 spots — and teams were tasked with forming the basis for a complete roster. All in all, nine current Cowboys were taken in the 224 picks, slightly higher than the average seven players.
From that perspective, the Cowboys have a roster that is in the upper half of the league. However, Dallas only had one current player picked in each of the first five rounds, none in the Top 10 and their second rounder didn't happen until the final selection of that stanza. Teams that compete for championships normally have more players who are highly regarded.
For instance, the odds-on favorite to win this year's Super Bowl, the Los Angeles Rams have the No. 3 player (QB Matt Stafford), No. 13 player (Edge Myles Garrett), and the No. 29 player (WR Puka Nakua).
As noted in this stand alone piece, Prescott was the 12th QB taken in this exercise.
This first wideout off the board was reigning OPOY Jaxon Smith-Njigba, going No. 19. nakua was next at 29, Ja'Marr Chase at No. 30. AJ Brown, Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Nico Collins, and Malik Nabers all went before Lamb in this redraft.
Pickens was the second WR taken in the third round, two spots after Tee Higgins, his closest situational comparison in the NFL. Higgins is the 1A wideout in Cincinnati.
There were no DTs taken in the first 32 picks. In the fourth round, Williams slots in behind Derrick Brown. Chris Jones and Zach Allen went in the third round, while Jeffery Simmons, Jalen Carter, Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence went n the second.
Downs was the final rookie made in the process. Notable rookies in the redraft:
