The Los Angeles Rams added some depth to their offensive tackle group by signing veteran D.J. Humphries. It was then reported on Friday that Alaric Jackson is once again dealing with blood clots, raising questions about his availability for the 2025 season – though the belief is he'll still play this year.
With Jackson's health scare, the Humphries signing makes more sense. He's a viable backup in the event that Jackson becomes unavailable, a smart addition by the Rams three months before the season.
Here are five things to know about Humphries, who was a decorated high school player and a standout in college.
Humphries went to Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte and was dominant from the jump, starting immediately as a freshman. He was an All-American and didn’t allow a single sack in his final three years. He also played basketball and was on the track and field team in high school, proving to be a terrific athlete.
After playing three years at Florida, Humphries declared for the NFL draft and was viewed as a first-round prospect. He landed with the Cardinals at No. 24 overall, the sixth lineman drafted that year. He’s one of 12 players drafted in the first round of the 2015 draft to make a Pro Bowl in his career.
Humphries’ NFL career got off to a rough start. He struggled in practice and the preseason, leading to him essentially redshirting as a rookie.
Head coach Bruce Arians made him inactive for all 16 games during his rookie year, as well as the Cardinals’ two playoff games. No other first-round rookie in 2015 was inactive for every game.
Humphries was a free agent this offseason after his contract with the Chiefs expired and he appeared to be headed for a stint with the 49ers. He agreed to a one-year deal with San Francisco in April but he never signed it, causing the pact to fall through.
Humphries had to wait a little while to find a new team to sign with but he’s since landed with Los Angeles.
Humphries made his first and only Pro Bowl in 2021 but statistically, his best season was in 2020 when he allowed just three sacks in 695 pass-blocking snaps and earned a career-high 88.3 grade from PFF. He’s been fairly consistent throughout his time in the NFL, finishing all but one season with a grade of at least 64.5; the lone exception was in 2024 with the Chiefs when he played just 92 snaps.
