Former Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries was said to already have signed - and sealed and delivered - with the San Francisco 49ers as of last month.

The former first-round NFL Draft pick played two games last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. ... so this was to be his big return to the stage.

But now comes a weird twist.

Even though the agents for the player announced the deal ... as of Friday morning, there is no signed deal.

And NBCSportsBayArea.com is reporting that there probably will not be one.

Humphries was originally selected in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Cardinals. He spent every season of his career aside from last year with that club. Humphries started 98 games for Arizona before an ACL tear forced the Cardinals to part ways with him.

Following his release, Humphries signed a $2 million, one-year deal with the Chiefs once he was fully recovered. Upon his return he suffered a hamstring injury and finished his season by playing only a meaningless Week 18 game against the Denver Broncos.

He did not play in Kansas City's playoff run or the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Humphries did not play well in his short stint with the Chiefs and missed blocks which yielded two sacks. ... earning him criticism from KC fans.

Humphries will need to show he is completely healthy, as his representatives say he now is.

But maybe he's not.

He was never coming in to San Francisco to become a starter, with Trent Williams firmly entrenched as the left tackle, and with Colton McKivitz planned on the right side.

But now? Humphries, it seems, isn't coming to San Francisco at all.
