You guessed it. The San Francisco 49ers have hired another former head coach.

Matt Eberflus will join their defensive staff in a similar role to the one Gus Bradley held last season, expected to assist new 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, after Bradley followed former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to the Tennessee Titans.

An official title for Eberflus remains TBD. Bradley was called the assistant head coach of defense.

The Cowboys fired Eberflus in January after his lone season as their defensive coordinator. Before that, he was the head coach of the Chicago Bears for two-plus seasons; he was fired 12 games into his third season there. He also served as the Colts defensive coordinator from 2018-21.

Similar to Saleh and Bradley in 2025, the 49ers will have their defensive staff in 2026 again anchored by former head coaches. Morris has been a head coach twice before. The 49ers opted for an "assistant head coach of defense" starting in 2024, with former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley assisting first-time defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. Then came Bradley in support of Saleh. And now Eberflus with Morris.
