The market for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones appears to be finicky.
According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, teams are calling the 49ers about a potential trade for Jones. However, Russini added that teams are describing the asking price as "astronomical." That type of terminology doesn't bode well for a potential deal, but the 49ers have also been adamant about keeping Jones and only dealing him for the right price.
So, what could this "astronomical" price be for a backup quarterback? The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported earlier this week that the 49ers told teams at the NFL Scouting Combine that they're "looking for a second-round pick plus more."
The reasons are simple: Jones has a cheap contract ($1.4 million base salary) and performed admirably in place of the injured Brock Purdy in eight games with a 5-3 record that kept the 49ers in playoff contention.
So, it makes sense that the 49ers are asking a lot for a key backup piece that could keep their season afloat if another big injury hits Purdy in 2026.
The problem, though, is that they might not ever find a trade partner this way.
