For nearly two decades, former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten lit up the scoreboard establishing himself as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.

Now six years after his playing career officially came to an end, Jason will get the chance to watch his son make a name for himself at the college level, albeit on the other side of the ball.

Liberty Christian (Argyle, TX) four-star linebacker Cooper Witten announced his commitment to Oklahoma on Tuesday. Cooper chose the Sooners over Georgia, Texas A&M and his dad's alma mater Tennessee.

Regarded as one of the best linebackers in the 2027 class, Cooper measures in at 6-foot-1.5 and 220 pounds. Recruiting site 247Sports ranks Cooper as the No. 44 overall player, the No. 1 linebacker and No. 8 player out of Texas in the class.

Liberty Christian finished the 2025 season with an 8-4 record. Cooper played in seven games but still led the team with 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.

Hails from a football family

Not only did Cooper grow up watching his dad shine in Dallas, he and his older brother CJ learned directly from him as Jason is the head coach at Liberty Christian.

Cooper's older brother currently plays for Rice as a linebacker.

Jason is regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. Prior to the NFL, he played at Tennessee from 2000-2002. In those three seasons he played in 36 games catching 68 passes for 797 yards and seven touchdowns.

That production led to the Dallas Cowboys picking him 69th overall in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He would go on to spend the next 15 seasons with the Cowboys before taking the 2018 season off, returning to Dallas in 2019 and then playing one final season in Las Vegas.

An 11-time all-pro, Jason finished his 17-season career with 1,228 yards for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns in 271 games. He's currently second all-time for receiving yards and receptions when it comes to tight ends.
