Scottie Scheffler admits he knew “not much” about Minnesota prior to arriving Monday ahead of this week’s 3M Open. He believes this may be his first-ever trip to the state.
He’s here, largely, because of how the tournament fit into the schedule. Scheffler didn’t want to sit out for three consecutive weekends leading into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Playing this week sounded better than teeing it up next week in Michigan.
So, the best player in the world is here in Minnesota. And, thus far, he likes who and what he’s seeing.
“One thing that’s kind of stood out so far … I was actually just talking to my manager about this, is people seem to be really thankful that we’re here,” Scheffler said, “which is surprising for a golf tournament.”
This is Minnesota’s golf tournament — its lone PGA Tour stop on the schedule. And many of the game’s brightest stars traditionally skip it due to its place on the schedule, located immediatley after the year’s final major, the Open Championship. So a star of Scheffler’s ilk adds significant relevance.
Everyone wants to see the four-time major championship winner in action. Crowds far greater than your average pro-am walking party were present at the crack of dawn Wednesday at TPC Twin Cities to catch a glimpse of Scheffler, who played alongside Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell.
Tournament executive director Hollis Cavner confirmed more tickets have already been sold for the 2026 3M Open than were for all of last year’s event, with four days of walk-up sales — one of the tournament’s primary sources of sales — still to come.
Many are coming to get a glimpse of Scheffler, who is still readjusting his body clock. After arriving back in the United States, Scheffler noted he woke up on his own at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday. Improvements were made Wednesday, when he slept until his 4:15 a.m. alarm went off.
Rest was one of the primary objectives on Scheffler’s pre-tournament docket this week coming off his escapades abroad. He noted caddie Ted Scott handled most of the prep work for TPC Twin Cities. On Tuesday, Scheffler took a “light” day that featured nine holes and only a small amount of other practice.
On Monday, he took his family out to explore the Minnesota metro.
“The few people that recognized me were very nice. They asked for photos. I was with my family so I said, ‘No, not right now,’ ” Scheffler said. “They didn’t make a face. They were kind of like, No, no, I totally understand, thanks for being here.”
Welcome to Minnesota.
“I was kind of taken back by how nice people have been so far,” he said. “That’s been really nice for us and our family. We’ve seen our neighbors this week, and everything so far has just been simple and easy and the people have been really nice, the fans have been really nice. There was a decent amount of people out (Tuesday) for a practice round.
“So I’m excited to get the week started, excited to get out in front of the fans this week and play some golf and see what the tournament environment will be like.”
