OMAHA, Neb. — About 16 hours after Joey Volchko walked off the mound in Charles Schawb Field after producing one of the best pitching performances in Georgia baseball history, the buzz he created was still apparent around the Bulldog program.
Teammates walked off the practice field Sunday afternoon June 14 at University of Nebraska Omaha and were still gushing about what they saw from the Stanford transfer in Georgia’s 7-1 win over Texas the night before.
“I’m still talking about it today, just as much as the Georgia fans are,” third baseman Tre Phelps said. “I’m a huge fan of Joey Volchko. To see him go out like that and throw such a gem …is amazing.”
Bulldog players showed respect to what Volchko had done by many changing their profile photos on Instagram temporarily to a photo of Volchko.
Among players making that switch were Daniel Jackson, Ryan Wynn, Justin Byrd and Phelps.
All after Volchko threw a complete game, four-hitter, striking out a career-high 15, walking one and allowing one unearned run.
“You got to show a tribute to one of the guys when they do something like that,” Phelps said. “That’s a hell of a performance by a great pitcher. I mean, been working hard all year to put on a performance like that so it was great to see where he did it.”
Volchko had the first complete game for Georgia in the College World Series since Mike Rebhan did it twice in 1990 during the Bulldogs’ run to the national title.
Volchko threw 84 strikes in his 114 pitches.
“They’ll write poems about him,” the SEC Network’s Peter Burns said on the wrap-up show from Omaha after Saturdays game. “Legendary down in Athens.”
Coach Wes Johnson said Sunday Volchko having a career-best outing in front of a crowd of 25,002 on that stage gives everyone confidence.
“Joey was calm, cool, collected, attacked the strike zone," he said. "It’s a big ballpark, you shouldn’t be scared of the strike zone. I thought our hitters did a really good job of just grinding out some at bats.”
Georgia turns to right-hander Caden Aoki against Oklahoma on Monday night in a 7 p.m. game.
He said Volchko set the standard he’ll try to reach.
“Absolutely,” he said. “We can laugh about it, but like that was incredible. Everybody wants to do the same. You feed off what you just saw the night before and it’s given not just myself and the pitching staff confidence but gave the whole team confidence. It really gave us a breath. Joey had that look in his eye and he didn’t blink once. He showed us how it’s done.”
