Vaibhav Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle's record in IPL 2026 eliminator, and legends cannot stop talking

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked out in the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday night and slammed 97 runs off just 29 balls in Mullanpur to inspire his team to Qualifier 2 on Friday, where they will face Gujarat Titans.

Although the teenager missed the century by a whisker, he had rewritten IPL history and left some of the greatest players the game has seen searching for words on social media.

He struck 12 sixes and 5 fours in an innings that carried Rajasthan Royals through to Qualifier 2. He had begun the match with 53 sixes for the season, while Chris Gayle had hit 59 in the entire 2012 IPL season, a record that had stood for 14 years. By the end of his innings, Sooryavanshi had surpassed it and now boasts 65 to his name, and still counting.

Sooryavanshi now sits atop the Orange Cap standings with 680 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 242.85. His 97 is also the second-highest individual score by a Rajasthan batter in an IPL knockout game, behind only Jos Buttler's unbeaten 106 against RCB in the 2022 Qualifier 2.

How did Tendulkar, Gayle, Vaughan and others react to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's innings vs. SRH in IPL 2026 Eliminator?

Sachin Tendulkar led the tributes praising his incredible bat swing.

He wrote: "Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s bat swing has been outstanding. What’s even more remarkable is how beautifully he clears his front foot to create room for balls aimed at his legs. This freedom allows him to play the way he does. That innings was nothing short of spectacular."
