'Let him die of cramps': Ex-CSK star S Badrinath sparks outrage for insensitive comment on Krunal Pandya during RCB vs MI originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Subramaniam Badrinath made a tasteless joke suggesting Ryan Rickelton should let Krunal Panya "die" on the pitch.
  • Krunal Pandya battled severe cramps throughout his match-winning 73 off 46 balls for RCB.
  • Rickelton's gesture of checking on Pandya mid-match won hearts.

Subramaniam Badrinath faces backlash over 'die' joke on a cramping Krunal Pandya

While Krunal Pandya's courage under severe cramps won hearts, Subramaniam Badrinath's ill-timed remark left a sour note on an otherwise memorable night for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's fans in Raipur as they beat Mumbai Indians by two wickets.

As RCB chased 167 against Mumbai Indians in the Raipur humidity, Krunal began cramping badly during his innings of 73 runs off 47 balls. The pain spread from his calf up to his glutes and eventually his back, leaving him lying flat on the pitch at one point while the physio rushed onto the field to treat him.

Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton helped Pandya stretch and even crouched beside his opponent on the pitch to check whether he was all right.

However, not everyone chose decency. Badrinath reportedly suggested, apparently in jest, that Rickelton should not help Pandya and simply leave him on the ground to die so MI could win.

Translation of what Badrinath said below video

"Krunal's leg cramp, Rickleton didn't say, 'Krunal, you die because of cramp, but he came to stretch Krunal."

What did Krunal Pandya say about the cramps?

After the match, Krunal admitted that he does not usually bat that long, and the experience was sobering for him.

"I was cramping a lot. It started from my calf, went to my glutes, went to my back, everywhere. I was cramping," he said.

"I mean, not often I bat that long, right? (smiles) So it was something new for me. But yeah, I'm pretty happy. At the end of the day, what matters is those two points. I guess I'll take care of a lot of fluids and food, and hopefully it will be better in the next game."

The Cricket News Opinion: Badrinath should be ashamed of his comment

Badrinath may have meant it as banter, but timing and context matter. Joking about letting an injured person suffer, even in jest, is the kind of humour that belongs nowhere near a public broadcast.

He should be ashamed of making that 'joke' and should apologise to Pandya on a public platform. Star Sports might just serve a warning as well to the former CSK batter.
