Sean Astin Joins Fox's 24

"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy star Sean Astin is joining the cast of Fox's 24, reports Variety.

He'll be a series regular when the 20th/Imagine TV-produced drama returns for its fifth season early next year. He'll be a part of the series' Counter Terrorist Unit; beyond that, the network is staying mum about Astin's character.

24 will relaunch with a two-night, four-hour event in January, with Jean Smart, Connie Britton and Brady Corbett all aboard as new cast members. The season debut is locked for Sunday, Jan. 8, at 8 p.m., with the second two hours airing on Jan. 9.

Don't know quite what to think. On one hand, this is Sean Astin. On the other hand, Sean Astin was decent as Mr. Smith in one of my favorite shows (Jeremiah).

24 still had decent ratings last year, but I wonder how many bullets they have left in the chamber if they're adding cast members like Sean Astin. I can't imagine what kind of role he'd play. I give 3:1 odds that he is the new Edgar/Chloe or Chloe's love interest.
