With rookie minicamps concluding and developmental camps beginning, the NFL offseason activity for players is beginning to ramp up. The new league year began in March with the legal tampering window ahead of free agency, and while players participate in April workouts, teams fully hit the ground running until organized team activities begin in May. After that, there are mandatory minicamps, training camps, and preseason workouts until the start of the regular season.
This year, like in 2024, the NFL is releasing its 2025 schedule late in the year. Last year, the schedule was released on May 15, making this year one of the latest years the NFL has released its 18-week, 272-game schedule.
Here's what we know about the 2025 NFL schedule release.
The schedule will be released on Wednesday, May 14th. Last year's May 15th release was the latest the NFL schedule had been released in 35 years. That this year's schedule is released around the same time could indicate that this is the timeline going forward.
Similar to last year, the 2025 schedule release will come on a Wednesday.
Prior to 2024, the NFL released the schedule on a Thursday for four years in a row.
The 2024 regular season schedule was released on Wednesday, May 15.
Here are the dates of the last five scheduled releases:
The NFL regular-season schedule release begins at 8:00 p.m. ET. It will be aired on several networks.
In years past, the NFL has announced the dates of several high-profile games ahead of the full schedule release. Those games are usually primetime or international games, including Black Friday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This year, the Week 1 opener is September 4 and showcases NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Select games are also announced over multiple networks and shows, including NFL Network, Amazon, Fox & Friends, CBS Mornings, Today Show, and Good Morning America.
The NFL Network will air the NFL Schedule Release show. Additional coverage and analysis will be on ESPN2, and streaming will be available on NFL+, NFL.com, and the NFL app.
The Week 1 matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys will air on NBC and Peacock on Thursday, September 4 at 8:20 pm EDT.
The Kansas City Chiefs will reportedly play the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil in Week 1 on Friday, September 5. The NFL is working on a deal to air the game for free on YouTube.
With Christmas falling on a Thursday in 2025, the NFL will schedule a tripleheader for the holiday. Two of those games will be streamed on Netflix, with the third being aired on Amazon Prime.
