Through six innings of Wednesday’s matinee against Baltimore, things were looking quite rosy for the Detroit Tigers. Tarik Skubal, the object of much MLB trade deadline speculation, was mowing through the Orioles lineup, collecting his 1,000th career strikeout and enjoying a 7-0 lead. Then the wheels fell off and the desperate Tigers ended up losing, 10-9, in 12 innings.
While many believed that this would be Skubal’s last start as a member of the Detroit orgnanization, win or lose, hanging on would have moved the Tigers one step closer to a playoff spot and perhaps changed the calculus. Now, things are especially bleak in the Motor City with most fans resigned to the fact that the two-time Cy Young Award winner will be shipped out of town to a more serious contender.
ESPN insider Jeff Passan did a SportsCenter hit a few hours after the Tigers’ meltdown and had a definitive answer about what the club will do with its valuable asset.
“Tarik Skubal is gonna be traded,” Passan said. “The Tigers haven’t gone to teams that are interested in him, and said as much at this point, but the expectation is that it’s going to happen in the next day or two.”
Which team are most likely to jump at the opportunity for Skubal’s services? Passan said that the Los Angeles Dodgers remain the favorites with the Milwaukee Brewers also being in play.
Skubal’s saga has been ongoing since the end of last year as there was debate about the Tigers making a move in the offseason instead of riding him out for one last run. They have not performed well enough to harbor realistic expectations of going on a tear and sneaking into the postseason so it appears this decision sort of made itself.
With just a few days left before the deadline, it appears we’ll finally have some resolution—even if it’s certainly not the kind Detroit was hoping to see.
