14 players from Elmira-Corning region making a mark in women's hoops

An Empire 8 women's basketball meeting between Elmira College and Alfred University on Jan. 30 featured a combined five graduates of Elmira High School and Corning-Painted Post.

That contest, which saw Express alumna Amarionah Dixon put up 21 points and 10 rebounds in Elmira's 67-50 win, was an example of the breadth of local talent competing at the college level this season.

A look at 14 of players from the region competing at four-year programs.

  • Amarionah Dixon, Elmira College: Through the 10-10 Soaring Eagles' first 20 games, Dixon is averaging 12.5 points and 10.4 rebounds. With Friday's effort, the senior guard matched her season-high 21 points scored against Russell Sage. She was named Empire 8 Player of the Week after putting up 18 points and nine rebounds against Keystone.
  • Megan Fedor, D'Youville University: Fedor, a redshirt junior, has averages of 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds while making 12 starts through D'Youville's first 18 games. She had 10 points and nine rebounds in a 78-64 victory over Queens.
  • Ellie Clearwater, SUNY Geneseo: Clearwater has six starts through 14-5 Geneseo's first 19 games, averaging 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds with 10 steals. Clearwater had a career-high seven points Friday in a 68-35 win over Hartwick.
  • Lauren Miller, Elmira College: Miller made 18 starts through the Soaring Eagles' first 20 games, averaging 8.5 points. She scored 16 points in a 68-49 win over Keuka.
  • Zhane Holmes, SUNY Oswego: Holmes has started all season for Oswego, averaging 10.8 points and 4.6 rebounds through the first 17 games to go with a team-high 34 steals. Holmes, a graduate student, had a stretch of five consecutive double-figure scoring games, capped by 18 points in a 64-52 victory over SUNY Oneonta on Jan. 20.
  • Jalea Abrams, Daemen: Abrams played in the first three games of the season before being sidelined with an injury. The junior guard had nine points in a 96-61 win over Goldey-Beacom.
  • Ashaya Wallace, Alfred University: Wallace has started seven of 9-11 Alfred's games, averaging 4.8 points and 3 rebounds. She scored 12 points against both Mount. St. Mary and SUNY Poly.
  • Caitlyn Wagner, SUNY Fredonia: Wagner has seen playing time in 10 of Fredonia's first 18 games, reaching the scoring column in four of them. Fredonia is 11-7.

Horseheads graduates​

  • Carly Scott, William Smith: Scott scored a career-high 15 points on five 3-pointers in a 60-56 victory over St. Lawrence. She went 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Earlier in the season she had 11 points and hit three 3-pointers against Ithaca.
  • Jordyn Gross, Nazareth: Gross, a freshman, has 19 points and seven rebounds through her first 14 games for Nazareth, which boasts a 16-4 record. Her career-high was eight points against Russel Sage.
  • Sophia Bonnell, Le Moyne: After averaging 8.4 points per game last season at Division III SUNY New Paltz, Bonnell has made the jump to Division I Le Moyne. She has three three-point games. Bonnell played a season-high 19 minutes Jan. 30 against Stonehill while making her second consecutive start.

  • Jayda Felker, Alfred University: Felker has started all 20 games for the Saxons, putting up averages of 8.6 points and 5 rebounds. She scored a season-high 20 points against Thiel in November, 17 against Fredonia on Dec. 13, and 16 on Saturday against Keuka.
  • Hannah Nichols, Elmira College: Nichols, who has played in nine games, scored four points for EC against Alfred State on Nov. 22.

Thomas A. Edison​

  • Payton Littlefield, Nazareth: Littlefield, a sophomore, has played in all 20 of Nazareth's games and averages 4.6 points for the 16-4 Golden Flyers. She scored a season-high 10 points in a win over the University of Rochester.
