Pirates ace Paul Skenes suffered his 11th loss of the season as Pittsburgh fell to the Marlins in the series opener at Loan Depot Park on Tuesday night. Skenes was pulled after 65 pitches, allowing one earned run on five hits, walking one, and striking out four over five IP.

While it was a relatively short outing for the reigning NL Cy Young winner, another concern was that his pitching velocity dropped significantly.

Skenes averaged just 95.7 mph on his fastball and maxed out at 96.5 mph, prompting fans to sound the alarm.

“Forget 97, he was at 95 all game. Something is clearly wrong,” one fan commented.

“Paul Skenes pulled after 65 pitches and his velo was down again. He topped out at 96.5 MPH. I’ve tried not to overreact during this stretch but every start out feels like a ticking time bomb. I hope that I’m wrong,” another fan commented.

Pittsburgh lost the series opener 2-0, falling to 58-63. It sits at the bottom of a highly competitive NL Central division, five games short of the .500 mark and 16.5 games behind divisional leaders, the Milwaukee Brewers.

Paul Skenes Wasn’t Surprised He Was Pulled After 65 Pitches​

In the post-game interview, Skenes was asked how he felt about being pulled from the game after just 65 pitches. The Pirates ace said that if he were the manager, he would have done the same thing.

“Not really. If I were the manager, I’d probably do it too. … Wish I could have gone more, but it is what it is,” Skenes said.

Skenes is now 9-11 on the season, with a 3.88 ERA, 166 strikeouts, and a 1.12 WHIP. He will make his next start in the series opener against the Tigers at PNC Park on Monday.
