LeBron James’ free agency has dragged on for almost three weeks. The four-time MVP said at the Game Plan Summit in New York last week that he would announce his decision soon, a statement that has only sparked more rumors and speculation.
While the NBA world is eager to know where James will take his talents next, NBA champion Kendrick Perkins offered an alternative for his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate.
NBA Champion Has a Simple Message for LeBron James: Join ESPN Like Tom Brady
Perkins, who won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, is now a staple at ESPN as one of the network’s top analysts. He said that during the Fanatics Fest in New York last week, people assumed he knew how James’ free agency would end.
On Monday at NBA Today, Perkins emphasized that he is as clueless as anyone about where the 22-time All-Star will play next. Due to all the hoopla surrounding James’ free agency, the analyst urged him to take what might be a shocking option.
“How about I make a pitch for us at NBA Today on ESPN. Hey, Bron, you don’t really need to play anymore. You’re really good at breaking down the game. You have a high IQ for the game of basketball, and I’m pretty sure that over here at the Worldwide Leader, the Mouse, we can pay you more than the vet minimum,” Perkins said.
“… How about you go here and close this chapter of your career and start your new one? We’re waiting on you, my brother. You see what Tom Brady is doing?” Perkins said.
James and Brady’s careers have similarities, prompting Perkins to make his pitch. The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar’s 23rd NBA season ended after the 2026 playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Brady left the NFL after a 23-year career. The iconic quarterback eventually signed a staggering 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox Sports in May 2022.
Brady stayed out of the spotlight the following year before debuting as the network’s marquee signing in 2024.

Perkins said that “GOATS” need a transition at some point in their careers, which made his pitch for James spot-on.
However, Perkins and his NBA Today co-hosts knew very well the pitch was not on the NBA superstar’s list of options, which is why they laughed at the suggestion.
James is determined to suit up for the 24th season of his NBA career. The only question is where he will play next for what might be the final chapter of his all-time great resume.
