‘It’s a shame’ – Legendary coach Geno Auriemma opens up on WNBA transgender controversy

The WNBA is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, says legendary UConn head coach Geno Auriemma about the ongoing debate regarding transgender athletes.

As the discourse surrounding WNBA’s eligibility criteria and transgender athletes in women’s sports rages on, more and more big names in the basketball world are giving their two cents.

There are very few people as respected as UConn coach Geno Auriemma in women’s basketball. The 72-year-old has the most NCAA D1 Basketball championships of any coach in history with 12.

And the Huskies’ main man is seemingly tired of this new conversation sweeping through the women’s game. He’s now called for attention to shift back to the league’s stars and the game on the court.

Geno Auriemma says the WNBA world needs to bring attention back to the stars and ‘better level of play’​

While the raging debate is unlikely to subside anytime soon, it has started to overshadow what is going on in the league heading into the most exciting part of the season.

And Auriemma has described the whole situation as a shame, making the case for the entire WNBA ecosystem to get back on track and focus on what really matters.

“It’s a shame because for years we’ve wanted more attention paid to women’s sports, craved the attention, wanted it, deserved it, and it never came to the extent that it is today,” Auriemma told Today.

“And now the attention unfortunately is on the wrong things. So they need to figure out a way to bring the attention back to the incredible young players that have come into the league.

“The incredible teams that are in the league, the level of play, how much it’s changed. Let’s talk about the game instead of these hypothetical things that may or may not happen down the road.”

Maybe the words of such a respected figure will have an effect in terms of changing the narrative around the sport at the moment. Only time can tell how it will all unfold.
