‘I Look Forward to Hearing From Her’ - Congressman Sends Clear Message to Cathy Engelbert Over Caitlin Clark Controversy

The debate over the treatment of Caitlin Clark in the WNBA is escalating, with several politicians joining calls for the league to do a better job of protecting one of its biggest superstars.

Congressman August Pfluger has sent a clear message to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, calling for more accountability on the matter.

Rep. Pfluger of Texas was one of 11 lawmakers who signed a letter addressed to Engelbert last week, demanding answers on the “physical hostility and violence” faced by the Indiana Fever superstar on the court. It also called for the league to take better steps to protect players from online harassment.

On Monday, the U.S. Congressman once again called on Engelbert to explain why Clark was being targeted by opposition teams with aggressive defending. Rep. Pfluger pointed out the July 24 deadline of the initial letter sent to Engelbert as he once again called for the league to do a better job of protecting Clark from aggressive fouls.

“Commissioner Engelbert has had every chance to protect Caitlin Clark and hold those responsible accountable, and instead we’ve gotten crickets. You can’t demand to be taken seriously as a league while ignoring what’s happening on your own courts. I look forward to hearing from her by July 24,” Congressman Pfluger wrote on X while reacting to Barstool CEO Dave Portnoy’s comments on Engelbert.

The issue reached a boiling point last month when Clark had to leave the Indiana Fever-Phoenix Mercury game after tweaking her back while defending her. She also took a punch to the throat from Alyssa Thomas. No foul was called on the play at the time, but the Mercury forward later received a one-game suspension.

Several prominent analysts and politicians criticized the WNBA for failing to better protect Clark in the wake of the incident. President Donald Trump also chimed in on the matter, criticizing the “rough” treatment Clark has received.

Clark has been managing a back injury since the start of the season and has missed four games as a result. The 24-year-old has played in two of the Fever’s last three games. Despite the injury worry and rough treatment she has received on the court, Clark is averaging 20.1 points, 7.8 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game this season.
