The Suns simply cannot come back with the same roster, just hoping the rookies improve. To do so would only guarantee the same diminishing returns we saw the second half of the season. The roster as it is is not built to be successful over an entire season and a playoff.
The major issue is...
Needless to say, the Suns should try to get in on that with a Booker trade should the Rockets not find any other takers.
I mean, they should, but they likely won't. Idiots, also.
I think the majority opinion here (for whatever that's worth) is beginning to coalesce around the notion that it's probably best to consider moving on from Booker while it's still possible (if remotely) to do so. And this forum isn't the only one I've seen where that sentiment is growing
Of...
Agreed. I have been incredibly unimpressed by Ott's coaching the entire second half of the year. He's starting to look like another Hornacek who had one philosophy and when that stopped working, he refused to do anything else.
How often does drafting a QB of the future when you already have a linchpin guy work out? I mean, the Packers have hit on it twice, but almost no one else in NFL history that I can think of off the top of my head has made it work.
Yes, I realize it's too soon to dump on Ott. We'll have to see which way things go next season. But so far, he hasn't shown much in the way of adaptability when his system isn't working and it does bear some circumspection.
Let's be real, Oso is at best a 10th man or lower on any other playoff team (and probably a lot of lottery teams, as well). I appreciate that he gets as much out of his very limited talent as he can, but the fact that Ott is relying on him so much is one of the major reasons the Suns have...
Whoever anyone thinks is the greatest Suns player, I think we can all agree that Sarver was the worst guy (meaning owner, player, coach, front office person, ballboy, vendor, janitor, or anything else) in Suns history... and it's not even close.
Spurs, Rockets - the two likely suspects from when this was proposed last off-season. The Rockets are obviously in win now mode with Durant, and we could potentially get some of our own picks back. Spurs might feel like they need just one more veteran star to pair with Wemby to push them past...
The problem with that is Booker is no longer 23 or 24. He's hitting his 30s and also battling perennial injuries that are likely to have a greater impact as he gets older. He's also going to be eating up a third or more of the salary cap as long as he's here. Between his salary and his physical...
It would take finding a championship adjacent team that feels they are one complementary piece away, and have an owner who's willing to go all in for a quick shot at the title. Possibly a larger market team that isn't as budget conscious.
Booker supporters acting like the world exists in a vacuum. But the reality is diminishing returns is going to kick in... and likely already has. He already has perennial injury issues and those are only likely to get worse as he moves into his 30s.
He really needs to be moved while he still...
He probably still won't get anything but garbage time the rest of the series. Ott has proven to be the stubborn type who would rather get curb stomped than step outside his "philosophy."
In theory, they could build off that core... IF they still had their draft picks or significant cap space. Since they have neither of those, that is a fool's errand.
Therefore, they need to move some current piece to have any reasonable chance to improve. Unfortunately, there isn't much value...
