Doesn't it seem like we are terribly thin for outfielders even at Triple-A? Do we have much in the way of strong OF prospects further down the pike, other than (converted) Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin?

Diablos roster overview -

April 5, 2004 - EL PASO, TX - The Arizona Diamondbacks have set the rosters for their top four farm teams, and the 2004 version of the El Paso Diablos will be young and well-stocked with some of the organization's top prospects. In fact, three of the organizations top five prospects (according to Baseball America) are slated to play in El Paso this season.

Leading the parade of prospects is shortstop Sergio Santos, tabbed as the second best prospect in the Arizona system by BA. Santos, the Diamondbacks' first-round pick in the 2002 draft, is just 20 years old, and last season clubbed ten homers and 65 RBI's during his time in Lancaster and El Paso.

Joining Santos in the elite prospect category are pitchers Dustin Nippert (3rd) and Adriano Rosario (5th), both of whom pitched for South Bend in 2003. Nippert, who was drafted right out of college, has posted an earned run average of 2.39 during his first two pro seasons. The 6'8'' right-hander battled through adversity last year and recovered from surgery to have a benign tumor removed from his back...a procedure that sidelined Nippert for six weeks. Rosario, at 18 years of age the youngest player on this season's roster, was an impressive 9-5 with a 2.86 ERA last year at South Bend.

Other top prospects opening the season in El Paso include right fielder Josh Kroeger (12th), center fielder Marland Williams (13th), catcher Chris Snyder (15th), pitcher Jared Doyle (16th), left fielder Jay Garthwaite (19th), first baseman Sean Luellwitz (25th), third baseman Brian Barden (28th), pitcher Sergio Lizarraga (29th) and pitcher Lance Cormier (30th). This gives the Diablos 12 of the top 30 prospects in the Diamondbacks' system, according to Baseball America.

This year's club is also one of the youngest ever assembled by the Diamondbacks, with the average age of the 24 active roster players coming in at exactly 23. Rosario is the lone teenager, while seven of the eight position-player starters are 23 or younger. The double-play combo of Santos and second baseman Danny Richar are both just 20 years of age. The youth movement leaves the Diablos with just three players over the age of 25, including reserve catcher Jeff Waldron, who at 27 earns the distinction as the team's "elder statesman."

Sidewinders beat Tacoma 9-8 in 12 horrendously sloppy innings last night - 7 errors, and could have been more. Tracy hit a Walk-Off, and generally hit well but threw/fielded poorly (but apparently was far from the worst!! They said Hairston looked really lame defensively.) Terrero went 5 for 6.

Hope someone way down the organizational line starts working on defensive fundamentals with the kids.

I gotta say folks- I'm bouncing between DBacks, Sidewinders, and Lancaster Jethawks tonight - and DBacks are definitely the least fun of the three. The lineup at Lancaster is really promising. The radio announcers at Tucson are wonderful, btw.

From various sources:
The Sidewinders won for the 4th day in a row thanks to a Chad Tracy grand slam that landed in the right field berm to put Tucson ahead of Portland 7-6.

SS Jerry Gil led off the 9th by reaching an error on Portland 3B Ben Risinger. CF Luis Terrero, who opened the day leading the PCL in hits, doubled to center moving Gil to 3rd base. With one out, Andy Green drew a walk on four pitches before Tracy’s game winning slam. It was Chad’s 2nd walk-off HR of the season, as he also accomplished that feat boosting the Sidewinders to a 9-8 win on opening nights.

Tracy finished the day 3-for-5 with 2 R and 5 RBI, giving him a team leading 10 RBI’s on the season. Terrero went 2-for-2 to raise his batting average to .591.

Hammock has 4 singles in 15 AB, and two stolen bases.

In El Paso, Brian Barden is en fuego - .524/.565/.762.

Lancaster Jethawks lineup is just clubbing everybody - only two guys have BAs below .300. D'Antona is at .400, and Conor Jackson .350 -he has 7 BB to 4 SO, btw.
I am SOOooo ready for an infusion of new Babybacks.
