Why to Watch:
1. The Matchup
Clarke Schmidt (0-1, 5.52 ERA) returns to the mound after being scratched Saturday with left side soreness. This will be his fourth start since coming off the IL with a shoulder issue. The Yankees are counting on the right-hander to end a stretch of three straight losses in which they’ve allowed go-ahead runs in the seventh or eighth inning.
Michael King (4-1, 2.09 ERA) starts for San Diego against his former club. Traded to the Padres in the Juan Soto deal in December 2023, King has blossomed in the NL. He posted a 13-9 record with a 2.95 ERA in 2024 and hasn’t faced the Yankees since the trade.
2. Judge’s Streak Ends
Aaron Judge went 0-for-3 with a walk Monday, ending his career-high 14-game hitting streak. His batting average dropped to .414, though he’s still reached base in 34 of 35 games. Judge is now 8-for-27 (.296) with three homers and six RBIs in seven career games against San Diego.
