The Brooklyn Nets are in the beginning stages of an offseason where they are looking to significantly change the roster in the hopes of improving on a 26-56 campaign during the 2024-25 season. Brooklyn is projected to lead the NBA in cap space and one of the ways they can use that money is by extending the players on the team that are eligible to do so.
One of the players that the Nets can extend is forward Cam Johnson and that decision will come down to how the team thinks he will be involved in the rebuild. Another player that Brooklyn could make a decision on extending is forward Maxwell Lewis, a player that had some great moments for the franchise during this past season while showing where he can improve.
Lewis, 22, came to the Nets in a midseason trade with the Los Angeles Lakers in which Lewis and D'Angelo Russell came to Brooklyn in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. Lewis, the 40th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft out of Pepperdine, did not earn much playing time during his stint with the Lakers, but he managed to see the floor more in Brooklyn.
Lewis' tenure with the Nets did not begin on a good note as he suffered a left tibia fracture a little over one minute into his debut with the team and the injury cost him over one month to recover from. Lewis had to get his way back into the swing of things after returning from his injury and his time to show what he can do came in the middle of March as the organization was dealing with some injuries.
Starting with Mar. 15, Lewis started seeing more consistent playing time and he averaged 7.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 43.2% from the field and 37.0% from three-point land over his final 15 games of the season. Lewis has two more years left under contract so an extension is not necessary, especially when considering that his 2025-26 season is non-guaranteed and 2026-27 is a team option.
