Graves Interview
#1 Being patient with Vonnie Holiday. They still have the offer on the table and hope to get him signed before the draft. Sounded like they want to have that sewn up before the draft.
#2 Says no timetable on Emmitt, but believes Emmitt wants to play here. Talked about what a great teacher he will be for Marcel Shipp. Talked about how he makes it clear to the vets that they are signing that they don't want to stunt the growth of their younger players.
Feels Emmitt will be playing for the Cardinals.
#3 Interested in Junior Seau. He has watched a lot of game film on him lately and sees that Junior has plenty left in the tank. Due to the problems with his contract, the Cards would wait until he is cut to approach him.
#4 Graves increased the offer to Martay Jenkins in the last 24 hours. Wants Martay backed. Talked about how guys like Jenkins, Holiday, ect...came into free agency with certain expectations and when those weren't met, haven't dealt with it well. Feels that the Cardinals will continue to make the best offer and see how that goes.
#5 Talked again about how they want a starter on the DLine BEFORE the draft. (Graves won't be drafting DL first round...you watch).
#6 Talk went to the off season conditioning program. I turned it off and went back inside the house (I was listening in my Mustang with the top down. It's a nice day)

after listening to graves..I am thinking we are going with newman or a wide receiver with the #6. I strongly disagree with a wide receiver..we have plenty of young guys with promise..we need a veteran wide receiver - but graves said we would be pretty much focused solely on the defensive line in free agency. My thinking is the cards may have andre johnson pegged at #6 - joe greene and our new receivers coach went to miami to see him on workout day... Not good in my opinion.. but it may be we are targeting newman..we have not brought in a punt returner and only 1 cornerback that I am aware of..does no good to have a ton of $$ in the secondary unless we put heat on the passer.

I give you my Kerouac 9's LOCK OF THE DRAFT: We will not draft a QB in the first four rounds. You can take that to the bank. Maybe next year, if McCown looks like the next Gio Carmazzi, but not this year.

I've posted a recap on the BRS (azcardinal.com).
There was little if any new info. (either good or bad, which probably is a pretty good thing).
I didn't draw any of the draft-strategy conclusions any of you did. Draft strategy wasn't mentioned at all in the interview, and any mention of it is purely a matter of us guys reading between the lines and trying to draw some conclusions.
But there was no mention in the interview of the QB position (either McCown or Leftwich) nor was there mention of CB (not even the signing of Coby let alone whether we'd draft Newman).
The only mention of WR had to do with whether or not we'd re-sign Mar Tay. (Rod is "hopful" - his favorite noncommital response to tough personnel questions). Frank Sanders' status also came up, but Rod never got around to addressing it. There was nothing in the interview that indicated whether we would or would not consider a WR in the draft.
One final thing - having nothing to do with the interview - the sudden interest in Kevin Williams. Jurecki is the one who's getting excited about him and is lobbying for us to take him if we trade down. (Of course, knowing that MJ is close to the Cards, maybe he "knows something." Or maybe not).

I am going to laugh my ass off when the Cardinals take Leftwich.
I would say the choice is going to come down to trading down or taking Leftwich/Johnson/Trufant.

Now that is ridiculous! Yea the Packers had their QB of the future and continued to draft QB's. Josh has not won the job yet they would be stupid to lay all their cards on Josh. Competition and may the best man win the job.

I agree, no Leftwich, no Newman. I've been hearing that both are suffering lingering effects to leg/knee injuries. I think Trufant would be an excellent pick, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a WSU allum...and Rien Long in the second round would a stroke of genius as well...
And remember, bats is smart...they use radar!

You can't keep using high picks on the same position year after year. That's a way to build a really crappy team (see Bengals, Cardinals [5 of last 6 #1s on O & D lines]). You have to give your young guys a chance to develop. Anything else is a recipe for a QB controversy, like what was going on in Detriot with Harrington and McMahon. Also, do you really thing AZ Fan would wait through a 4-12 season with a #6 QB sitting on the bench? Hell, no. We were demanding Jake be the starter halfway through his rookie season.

AZ fans are not savvy enough (like NY Jet fan, for example) to wait a year or two for a rookie to come of age (looking in your direction, those who are calling Wendell Bryant a bust) on the bench before charging into the starting lineup.
I think we can all admit to ourselves that only a staggering draft (something in the ballpark of best draft among all the other teams in the league) will keep the Cards competitive this season, and by competitive, I mean 7-9. I don't think that the coaching staff or management could handle the heat of having the press and fans calling for the rook after a three-game losing streak. They showed that they didn't when Jake was a rook. They showed that they didn't with Thomas Jones. I can see that after Blake's first 2-pick game, Bickley will be asking why we have a $6 mil. #1 draft pick sitting on the bench when surely he could equal that performance on the field as a starter.

Here's a thought: doesn't Andre Johnson strike you as a more talented version of Jason McAddelly? Both guys unpolished gems. I mean, if Sullivan and McGinnis fell in love with the latter's potential at the Senior bowl last year, then it would seem that they are simply beside themselves with respect to Johnson.
