Lionel Messi practiced separately from teammates during Inter Miami’s training session on Saturday, Aug. 9, with coach Javier Mascherano expressing optimism about the reigning MLS MVP’s upper-leg muscle strain.
However, Messi won’t travel or play with Inter Miami on the road against in-state rival Orlando City on Sunday, Aug. 10.
Messi will miss his second straight match, after suffering the minor muscle injury during the club’s second Leagues Cup game on Aug. 2.
“It would be crazy to take the risk of bringing him with everything coming up, but we are optimistic that he will soon be back with us,” Mascherano said of Messi.
Inter Miami, Orlando City, the L.A. Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders reached the 2025 Leagues Cup quarterfinals, while Toluca, Pachuca, Tigres UANL and Puebla will represent Liga MX in the tournament.
Inter Miami advanced to the knockout stage, following a 3-1 win against Pumas UNAM on Aug. 6 – where Luis Suarez had a goal with assists to Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende.
Along with visiting Orlando, Inter Miami will host defending MLS Cup champion L.A. Galaxy on Aug. 16 before they compete again in the Leagues Cup against Tigres on Aug. 20.
Still, the regular season matches are vital for Inter Miami’s push up the MLS Eastern Conference standings – where they rank fifth behind the Philadelphia Union, FC Cincinnati, Nashville SC and the Columbus Crew.
“Clearly our idea is to try to win the 12 games we have left in the regular season, win the three League Cup games if we have the chance, and take it game by game,” Mascherano said. “The demands and responsibility of this club are to try to compete and go out and win every game we play.”
The match is available on Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass.
The Aug. 10 match begins at 8 p.m. ET (9 p.m. in Argentina).
