Jonathan Gannon announced Jacoby Brissett would once again start for the Arizona Cardinals this week, coming off an impressive performance on the road to beat the Dallas Cowboys. Although Kyler Murray is still sidelined with a foot injury, Gannon tried to approach the situation with cautious optimism, saying that Murray could still see time on Sunday in a must-win game against the red-hot Seattle Seahawks.
A day later, it was announced that Murray would miss at least four games by being put on the injured reserve. He still has three years left on his megadeal, which will take him into his 31-year-old season, but he only has one year of guaranteed money left on his contract.
Going into the offseason, if the Cardinals miss the postseason again, Gannon and the front office are going to need to make a big move to save their own jobs. That might very well be saying goodbye to their former No. 1 overall pick and attempting a rebuild with Brisett possibly at the helm and/or a younger quarterback learning the ropes.
So, if this did happen and the team did try to trade Murray, who would be the top candidates?
Here are my top three landing spots for Kyler Murray.
This has to make the most sense, right? The team didn’t sell off all its parts at the deadline and still seems to believe that the foundation of this team — possibly aside from the quarterback — is worth investing in. If Mike McDaniel wants to keep his job and the team brass believes that Tua Tagovailoa is the issue, trading for Murray would give them an exciting quarterback to pair with an offense that should be fun to watch but has been anything but in 2025. And if Murray fails, pretty much everyone who makes this trade will be gone, and the Dolphins will succumb to their 800th rebuild since winning a playoff game a quarter of a century ago.
The Raiders gambled on Geno Smith and busted. The foundation is already on fire, so why not dip down to Glendale from Vegas and pick up Murray in hopes of salvaging all the moves they made last season? Murray and Smith were divisional rivals forever, and with Smith failing, they need some sort of hope in a town that is doing everything possible to make the city love them. It might not be the best choice, and they’re probably better off using their 2026 first-rounder on a quarterback, but where’s the fun in that? Make a big trade, go get a wide receiver in a deep class with that pick, and hope the trio of Murray/Jeanty/rookie WR can ignite something.
Why not? They have three first-round picks. Instead of using any of those on a quarterback and experiencing Groundhog Day forever, why not try to bring in your own reclamation project and surround them with tackles, receivers, and playmakers alike to bolster the team? Sure, it’d probably fail and set the Jets even further in need of a man under center, but at least it’d be a little bit different?
