After being selected No. 2 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz, Canton native and former Kansas Jayhawks star Darryn Peterson is set to compete in Summer League action.
It will be the first opportunity for NBA fans to see what Peterson brings to the table after a polarizing one-and-done season at Kansas. Peterson missed 11 games due to a mix of hamstring issues, flu-like symptoms vs. top-ranked Arizona and cramping. Peterson later said his frequent issues with cramping were tied to having high doses of creatine in his body.
His inconsistent availability caught the ire of ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, who in February said he "can't trust" Peterson and that no NBA team should consider taking him No. 1 overall in the draft. Peterson fired back at Stephen A's harsh words, defending himself in part by saying, "Basketball is my life."

Well, now Peterson has the best opportunity to prove all of his doubters wrong at the NBA level with the Jazz.
That quest begins in Summer League competition. And while Summer League is rarely a significant indicator of things to come — players have struggled in Summer League only to thrive in their NBA careers and vice versa — a good showing would go a long way toward quieting his critics.
From Kansas to the pros: Canton's Darryn Peterson reacts to Utah Jazz picking him in NBA draft
Salt Lake City Summer League is a week of basketball games that begins in early July. The Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder are all set to compete.
Games will reportedly be available to watch across ESPN networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU), on NBA TV or through the NBA League Pass app with a valid subscription login.
Here's a look at the schedule, which includes a possible matchup between Peterson and No. 1 overall draft pick AJ Dybantsa of the Wizards:
In 24 games played as a freshman at Kansas (23 starts), Peterson averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from 3-point range. He also made 82.6% of his free throws.
He scored a season-high 32 points in an overtime win against TCU on Jan. 6, shooting 8-of-18 from the floor and converting 13 of his 15 free throw attempts.
All told, Peterson scored at least 20 points in 12 of his college games.
