Love it, Loathe it, or Meh?
Love it, Loathe it, or Meh?
The fan in me absolutely despises this move. I have fielded numerous text/Facebook messages from Laker fans rubbing this in my face. As if the inevitable collapse of this franchise was painful enough to handle, my (former) favorite player in the league now plays for my least favorite professional sports franchise in the world. I was hoping Nash would go somewhere that I could comfortably root for him. Now, I am contemplating using my Nash jersey as a bath mat.
I'm just wondering why they made the deal so quickly. Rumors were that they were going to able to pry Shumpert from the Knicks. I don't like Shumpert, but he'd probably have greater value on the resale market than any of the Laker picks. So it looks like the Suns jumped at the first decent offer for Nash, rather than milking the clock and seeing whether they could get a couple of opponents locked in a bidding war.
As for seeing Nash suit up for the Lakers, whatever. Marion and Kidd won a title with Dallas, Stoudemire may eventually make a deep playoff run with the Knicks, Barkley wanted to chase a ring with the Rockets. It happens.

Nash wanted the Lakers so he could be near his kids. At first, Sarver said no, but relented, presumedly because Nash pushed him into it. Ultimatum? Maybe.

Suns had little say in the matter since Nash was an unrestricted FA. I really don't think the Suns had any intention of strong arming Nash away from where he wanted to be.
The Lakers used a trade exception to make room for Nash's salary. That means they had to acquire him by trade. You can't use a TE to sign a free agent. Nash had zero leverage to go the Lakers; the only way it was possible (for decent money) was through a sign-and-trade.
I have thought of those thingsPeople are also forgetting two important things.
Lakers in 2015 have a dang good shot of being in their once in fifteen year rebuilding modes. Thus it's a small chance it's a lottery pick (1-13)
The other part which could be very important....if we suck...yet don't win a lottery (top 3), we have ammo to move up and get a guy we want. Maybe even 2-4 times.
I have thought of those things
Not sure why there's so much angst in here today. Anything is better than watching an old,tired,re-treaded mediocre product on the court that had no future whatsoever...which is what we've seen here the last couple years.
These moves may not all turn out to be shiny and golden, and they probably wont because its still Sarver's SUNS we're talking about here ,but i'm intrigued....and i actually give a **** about what this team is doing again.

What do you do? say, "No Steve, we know you want to be where your kids are, but we have a long standing hatred for the Lakers. We know we aren't going to compete with them any time soon, and we know the package is good. We know that you could just walk to Toronto and we get nothing. But we just hate Kobe so tough luck buddy."
You understand that the Lakers couldn't get Nash except by trade, right? So the Suns say, "We know you don't want to go to Toronto; the only realistic options are New York and Los Angeles. We're open to either, but we think we can get better value with the Knicks. Can you hold off for a couple of days while we get each side to maximize their offer?" It's not complicated.
