The Washington Commanders continued their offensive line rebuild on Thursday night, selecting Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. with the 29th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The board broke nicely for general manager Adam Peters, with several linked to Washington still on the board when the Commanders went on the clock.
Peters, though, stuck to his board, choosing to build around — and protect — franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels by selecting one of the draft's top offensive line prospects. The Commanders clearly had interest in Conerly, meeting with him multiple times and hosting him on a top 30 visit. The 6-foot-5, 311-pounder never missed a collegiate time, starting every game at left tackle over the past two seasons, earning All-American and All-Big Ten honots.
Of course, you can't make everyone happy. As expected, some took to X to express their frustrations over the pick. Why? Great question. Overall, though, most were happy that Washington did what good organizations do, continuing to build in the trenches and protect your franchise quarterback.
Here are some reactions to Washington's selection of Conerly:

High-level athlete
Two reps that really showcase Josh Conerly Jr’s (76) ability to get out of his stance and explode as a puller in space. Kid can move at 6’5”, 311.

Robert Griffin weighs in
The Washington Commanders did what you are SUPPOSED TO DO. Protect your young QB Jayden Daniels. Brought in Laremy Tunsil and drafted Josh Conerly Jr.

Al Galdi
Zero problem with Adam Peters at 29 taking an offensive tackle in Josh Conerly Jr. Make the offensive line elite.

Not sexy — which is good
One thing that pops with Josh Conerly Jr — footwork. At 6’5”, he glides and can redirect varying body types with ease.
Will make an impact whether at tackle or guard. Not a sexy pick, but a damn good one for Washington.

Former NFL OL and current analyst
Conerly is 21 years old and improved so much during the back half of the season. Watch his play against Carter in the Big 10 title game. He's a fluid mover that needs to get stronger which will happen with age. https://t.co/xviLpzSbUT

Watched every snap of this game. Conerly was a flat-out STUD https://t.co/5W4CdX4swj

Smart pick
Conerly is a smart pick. I thought Donovan Jackson would be the guy. But he was already gone. Either way, more OL help early (especially in a not that deep OL draft) is a smart move

Building the foundation
Tunsil, Coleman, Biadasz, Cosmi, Conerly. That's a strong OL foundation to build around Jayden Daniels and protect the #Commanders most important asset. SUPER athletic across the board, lots of versatility. Nice plenty of youth and experience too, future-proofing OL

Senior Bowl standout
More per @dpbrugler on Josh Conerly of #Commanders "At Senior Bowl, was voted the top offensive lineman on the National Team during the week of practice."@team980

More proof Brandon Coleman is headed to guard
If you hate the Conerly pick I suspect you’re higher on Coleman as a tackle than Peters currently is.
