J.J. McCarthy has seen his hype train slow down after impressing everyone in his lone preseason appearance last August. He showed an ability to make layered throws, have mobility within the pocket, and to hit his receivers in stride.
All of that answered a lot, but questions still remain in the eyes of some.
On Wednesday, Wes Phillips, McCarthy's and the Vikings' offensive coordinator, spoke to the media. He discussed a litany of topics, one of which was his new starting quarterback. When asked about his new starter, he couldn't sing his praises enough.
"I think J.J. (McCarthy) has always had a strong arm. We saw that when we went to Michigan and worked him out. He's physically in really good condition right now, so that's always gonna be somewhat of a factor, but he's got a natural ability to put that zip on the ball."
McCarthy continues to get misunderstood, largely due to how he was used at Michigan in their run-heavy offense.
Folks have wanted to poke holes in his game, despite what we have seen in the preseason and at the scouting combine last draft season. Minicamp is wrapping up, so it will allow for weeks to build in terms of the tension of seeing him at Vikings training camp in July.
