Tyron Smith has reached the end of the road. The elite NFL offensive lineman who was a longtime anchor for the Dallas Cowboys decided to retire from pro football. He signed with the Cowboys so that he could retire as a member of the team. Smith, one of the greatest linemen USC football has ever produced, will surely have a spot in Canton, Ohio, as a future member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Tyron Smith made seven straight Pro Bowls. He helped the Dallas Cowboys become a top-two seed in the NFL playoffs on multiple occasions. He gave a measure of stability to a franchise which has often been volatile. As bad as things have been for the Cowboys over the past decade, they would have been far worse without Smith being a pillar of the offensive line.
It's not an accident that the Cowboys have struggled in recent years with Smith not being as healthy or durable as he was in his prime in the mid-to-late 2010s. The 2020s marked a period of more injuries and disruptions for Smith, who spent the 2024 season with the New York Jets before signing a one-day contract to retire as a Cowboy.
Tyron Smith will join Tony Boselli, Anthony Munoz, Bruce Matthews, Ron Yary, and the other great USC offensive linemen from NFL history in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Smith will have a bust in Canton and will wear a gold jacket at some point. The only question is when. One of the great pro Trojans of all time has taken his cowboy hat and ridden into the sunset.
