The Golden State Warriors are on the brink of advancing to the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, holding a 3-2 series lead over the Houston Rockets. Game 6 is set for Friday night at Chase Center, where the Warriors aim to capitalize on home-court advantage to close out the series.
However, amidst the playoff intensity, forward Jonathan Kuminga's future with the franchise has become a topic of speculation.
Kuminga, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has shown flashes of potential throughout his tenure with the Warriors. In the 2024-25 regular season, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, shooting 45.4% from the field. His athleticism and versatility have been assets, but inconsistencies and injuries have hindered his development.

Notably, Kuminga was benched late in the season and has seen limited action in the playoffs, averaging 9.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists over two games against the Rockets.
According to ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel, the the Brooklyn Nets are predicted to be a possible landing spot for Kuminga in restricted free agency. The Nets are projected to have significant cap space this summer, making them a viable destination.
Contract negotiations between Kuminga and the Warriors have been challenging. Reports indicate that the two parties were approximately apart in extension talks before the season, with Kuminga seeking a higher annual salary than the Warriors were willing to offer (via Anthony Slater of The Athletic). This impasse, combined with his reduced role in the playoffs, suggests that a sign-and-trade scenario could be on the horizon.
Whether he remains with the team or finds a new home, Kuminga's next steps will be a major talking point in the summer.
