The War of Public Education continues

President-elect Donald Trump intends to name Betsy DeVos, a conservative activist and billionaire philanthropist who has pushed forcefully for private school voucher programs nationwide, as his nominee for Education Secretary, according to a person close to DeVos.

Trump’s pick underlines his promises on the campaign trail to put “school choice” — the expansion of taxpayer-funded charter schools and vouchers for private and religious schools — at the center of his efforts on education.

DeVos grew up in Holland, Michigan, the daughter of Elsa Zwiep Prince (later, Broekhuizen) and Edgar Prince, a self-made industrialist.[4][5] Edgar was the founder of Prince Corporation, an automobile parts supplier based in Holland, Michigan, which at one time employed almost one-quarter of the population of the town.[4] DeVos' mother has been a philanthropist and has been active in conservative social causes, including support of an anti-gay marriage ballot proposal in California.[6] DeVos' brother, Erik Prince, founded Blackwater USA, a private security firm which had operations in Iraq.[

Never worked in the public sector nor for any education agencies public or private. It seems she is simply a very wealthy housewife who holds extravagant fundraisers.

That makes her "exceptionally well-qualified" in Trump's version of reality.

Betsy DeVos, our new Secretary of Education's organization (she was a member of the board for 10 years) claimed child labor is "A Gift our kids can handle."

    Huffington Post's article, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/betsy-devos-child-labor-acton_us_5836eb7fe4b000af95edf12e

I keep thinking "Did I hit a wormhole somewhere and end up in the 1800's? Where can I find that tear in space and time to get back to my normal world?"

    Daughter-in-law of Rich DeVos
Was just going to post this till I read yours. Also, daughter-in-law of Rich DeVos, co-founder of Amway. Maybe we can turn this country into a giant pyramid scheme and make America Great Again.

We can now sell soap to 3rd world countries to fund our military machine.

Too qualified. He'll probably nominate someone with no legal experience.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens if she gets her way with school vouchers. Based on the first amendment to the constitution, they won't be able to limit the type of religious schools that receive funding from vouchers. That means that Islamic schools, Hindu schools, Jewish schools etc. could all be set up and funded by tax payers. There's definitely going to be a few Republicans who aren't going to be happy with that.
