During the game, Montgomery didn't show any signs that there was anything too concerning. He left the game for a bit, but returned later with a minimal knee wrap and finished the game.

THE DAY AFTER

The next day, Lions fans were blindsided when Dan Campbell stated that Montgomery would be having MCL surgery and would be out for the season. This was déjà vu times three, as MCL surgery had already ended the seasons of John Cominsky, Connor Galvin, and Derrick Barnes earlier in the year.

THE RESURRECTION

But before Lions fans' tears had even dried, there were reports that Montgomery was seeking other opinions and might not need surgery. By the end of the week, tears of sorrow turned into tears of joy as it was confirmed that he would try to rehab and return later in the season.

THE RETURN

Three games and five weeks later, Montgomery made his return in the playoff game vs the Commanders rushing for 28 yards on 7 carries.

THE OUTLOOK

While the public diagnosis was an MCL, the fact that at least one orthopedic surgeon recommended surgery suggests the injury may have been a bit more complicated. Typically, a straightforward, isolated MCL doesn't require surgery. Other knee ligament damage is possible, as well as cartilage damage which could present a problem in the future.

During this offseason, Montgomery has appeared to be healthy, upbeat, and active during team workouts. He was limited at voluntary OTA in June, but that could be simply due to load management for this proven, 28-year-old running back.

Regardless of the injury specifics, the fact he was able to return last season, even if just for a single game, bodes well for 2025 and beyond. Injury residual effects are always possible though, so his performance early this season will be something to watch.

He is signed with the Lions through the 2027 season, which means hopefully we see many more of these beastly runs in the future....
