Throughout this season, Tahlequah baseball’s top of the lineup has been one of its strongest pieces.

Consisting of Cutter Girdner, Synjin Sampson and Brayden Carey that trio has been a big part of the Tigers’ wins this season.

That trio has been the most productive throughout the season for the Tigers.

“Those guys show up with a professional mindset every single day,” THS coach Cody Pair said. “They prepare the right way, trust their plan and compete in the box. What makes them special is that they’re not chasing numbers, they’re focused on winning pitches and doing damage when the opportunity presents itself. That’s why they’ve been consistent all year long.”

Even though that trio isn’t chasing stats it sits at the top of most of THS’ statistical categories. Girdner leads the Tigers with a .562 batting average, followed by Sampson (.452) and Carey (.400).

With those players leading the way at the plate, the Tigers senior ace, Levi Kelly, should get the game one start. Kelly has been the Tigers’ top pitcher this season, leading the way with a .381 earned run average over 33 innings with 36 strikeouts.

Ahead of the playoffs, Pair doesn’t want him to change anything.

Tahlequah’s Levi Kelly delivers the ball earlier this season.

“We just want Levi to be Levi; pound the zone, work with tempo and set the tone early,” Pair said. “When he’s attacking hitters and commanding his fastball he gives us a chance every time. He’s our tone-setter, competitor and our guy. We believe in him and we know he’s going to give us everything he’s got.”

Before the Regional Tournament opens, the Tigers are focused on improving the little things rather than reinventing anything major.

“The break has been great for us, not just physically to recover, but mentally to reset and refocus,” Pair said. “We’ve really dialed in our execution; tightening up our approaches at the plate, cleaning up some defensive details and continuing to grow our baseball IQs. It’s about sharpening the edges and making sure we’re playing clean, winning baseball when the lights come back on.”

The Tigers open the Regional Tournament at home, on Monday, May 5 against Kansas.

Coming into the game the Comets sit with a 19-10 record.

“Kansas is a quality opponent, they’re going to be really well-coached, competitive and they’ll fight for 21 outs,” Pair said. “We expect a battle, that’s what makes this time of year special: good teams going head-to-head with a lot on the line. We’ll respect the opponent, but stay locked in on what we do best.
