GONIC - Top-seed Justin Grondahl was one of three Seacoast golfers to advance to the Round of 16 on Thursday at the 122nd New Hampshire State Amateur at Rochester Country Club.
Unfortunately, the Round of 16 would be the end of the road for Grondahl, Harvin Groft - the 24th seed, and Jamie Ferullo - the 36th seed.
Grondahl, who lost to No. 17 seed Damon Salo, 4-and-3, advanced with match-play wins over Tucker Roberto and Harry Garland.
"The morning was alright," said Grondahl of the win over Garland. "I thought I kind of figured some things out with the driver. I hit the driver good for the most part in the second match, and the putter let me down a little bit. It is what it is. I'm proud of the way I fought and played the last 10 holes. So, I've got to take some positives from it."
Grondahl said the 10th and 11th holes were two of his favorites, and the par-3 12th was probably the most difficult.
"(I enjoyed) the course, the course is in great shape," said Grondahl of the NHGA e-Club. "There's a lot of tricky and fun pins. It made for a really interesting tournament."
Groft defeated No. 9 Jack Pepin in the Round of 32, before losing to eighth-seeded James Pleat, 4-and-2. Ferullo, who won his first Seacoast Am title in 2023, defeated No. 4 Nate Crowley, 1-up in the Round of 32, and then lost to No. 20 Gavin Richardson, 3-and-2.
"I struck the ball really well this morning," Ferullo said. "I think I got a little fortunate (Crowley) missed a bunch of putts, but he played solid and was a tough opponent. I think I got a little lucky to get through the morning, with the way I was performing around the greens, but I struck the ball really well, kept putting pressure on him and that definitely helped."
Ferullo clinched the match with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. He was hoping that would give him a little momentum going into the afternoon match.
"It was just enjoyable to be out here, be with my dad and a bunch of people who came to watch," Ferullo said. "Overall, it's a lot of what-if's right now. I think I made one birdie today. I've got some mental issues going on right now with chipping and putting, and it cost me dearly. I felt like I hit the ball plenty well ... chipping and putting just killed me."
Ryan Zetterholm (Peace GC Online) lost to Salo, 3-and-2; Peter Lown (NHGA e-Club) lost to Richardson, 3-and-2; Kurt Eddins (Cocheco Country Club) lost 3-and-2 to Ryan Scollins; Connor Allard (Golf Club of New England) lost to Josiah Hakala, 1-up; Kory Ferullo (Rochester CC) lost to Matt Gifford, 1-up and Derek Dinwoodie (Farmington CC) lost in 19 holes to Jake Nutter.
Match play continues on Friday with four quarterfinal matches, and two semifinals. The two semifinal winners will square off Saturday for the 36-hole championship.
