The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced changes to its annual summer tournament last year.

It’s time for a refresher on those alterations. For the first time since 1990, women’s professional tennis returns to Newport. The Hall of Fame will host a dual tournament with the Hologic WTA Tour joining the ATP Challenger Tour.

Newport previously hosted just a men’s 250-level tournament. This summer, Newport welcomes joint ATP Challenger 125 and WTA 125 tournaments. The new tournament format will have equal prize money and still include the doubles draw.

“The International Tennis Hall of Fame is very excited to welcome the Hologic WTA Tour and host twice the tennis this year at the Hall of Fame Open,” Tournament Director Brewer Rowe said in a press release recently. “We are confident in our ability to continue to attract top talent from both tours and deliver a first-class fan experience.”

The tournaments are slated for July 6 to 13, the second week of the Wimbledon Championships, at Newport Casino.

Who are the 2025 inductees?

The 2025 class is a doozy, and the reintroduction of a women’s tournament comes at an apt time. Maria Sharapova headlines the latest class of tennis stars entering the Hall.

Sharapova, a five-time singles major champion, is one of only 10 women in tennis history to achieve a career singles Grand Slam, according to a press release from the Hall of Fame. She paced the world rankings five times throughout her career.

Joining her in the 2025 class are Bob and Mike Bryan. The brothers won 16 major doubles titles and hold the record for most weeks atop the ATP doubles world rankings (438).

“I am incredibly grateful to the fans all around the world who supported me during the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Fan Vote,” Sharapova said in a September release.

“It is a tremendous honor to be considered for the Hall of Fame, and having the fans’ support makes it all the more special.”

The trio of tennis stars will be inducted into the hall during a celebration in Newport from Aug. 21 to 23.

Here's what the Tennis Hall of Fame induction celebration includes

The inductees will be in Newport in the last full week of August as part of the redesigned Hall of Fame celebration.

The three-day event includes a Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic. It will feature two teams consisting of Hall of Famers: Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Tracy Austin, Jim Courier and Gigi Fernandez playing in six matches of fast-paced mixed doubles.

The Pro Classic starts on Friday, Aug. 22, at 2:30 p.m. and follows a live recording of Patrick McEnroe’s "TennisWorthy" podcast and a Hall of Fame Q&A segment.

The formal induction ceremony is on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m. Tickets went on sale June 2. Seeing these legends pick up a racquet again might be worth the price of admission.
