Give him some looooovveeeee!

I was down on him tooo. But I think last year he showed some major improvement. Since Mak didn't excel at blocking we now have that covered with Hodgins. Mak turned into "our secret weapon" last year. Why let him go after he finally has shown improvement? Resign him to the veteran minimum (maybe throw in a signing bonus of bowling shoes) and let Mckinley and Mak duke it out again. I don't believe that he has gotten any love from any other teams. I think that he would be a good #2FB.

Missablocka Not................

It's time for Missablocka to do what the rest of us do and that is have a real job. Hopefully, Missablocka received a degree from that bastion of academics Nebraska.

I'd take him in a heart beat. He's got more talent than anyone else as backup and is extremely intelligent, I believe Academic All-American and graduated with a double major, economics being one of them. He may even have his masters. He's probably taking a paycut playing for the Cards.

Last article I saw said Nebraska produced more Academic AA than any other school in the nation, but hey, thanks for playing anyway, Kaaarl, and I did love you in Caddyshack.

He doesn't excell at special teams the way MCKinnley does, and your backup FB better be able to play special teams.

I don't think McKinnley is going out

McKinnely signed a two year extension and does well on special teams, Joel is not coming back. I also have heard a lot about that UDFA Doolin(?) as a possible Larry Centers type player who I believe will find himself on the practice squad.

I was historically one of the anti-"missablocka's" critics.
Last year he did seem to improve, and showed he could be a decent receiver. I still question his vision in regard to blocking, however.

That and the fact that the Cards used Steve Bush fairly effectively out of the fullback position, and McKinley's resigning, I really doubt he will be on the team.

I think Bush makes a great backup to the position and adds a nice new dimension to the lineup.

Just out of curiosity, I went back and checked Jim O's timeline.

There I noticed, surprisingly to me at least, that the announcement of Hodgin's signing (4 yrs) and McKinley's resigning (2 yrs) occured on the same day. (March 12).

I interpret that as pretty much a guarantee Mackovicka won't be back. I think McKinley's special teams play was probably the key to that. With some of the players we have since acquired who are also special teams players, I'm wondering just how secure McKinley's job even is.

We seem to have a lot of special teams players now, and to keep McKinley primarily for that reason seems somewhat questionable to me, considering Bush can fill the role as backup, and I'd personally rather see one of the other running backs utilize that spot on the roster.

Lars the Red, do you really think Mackovica would make more money doing something else?! Hardly anybody makes the dough he makes. I would love to see how many people with his academic credentials make as much as he does, I bet less than 1%.

I just reread your post, maybe you meant he could make more money on another team? Now that may be possible.

I just don't think it would be bad for him to compete. We are stacked with special teams players it seems. He is a overall better FB than Mckinley. I am not 100% sure on Mckinley salary but I don't think he got a very large signing bonus. If Mak was truly better we could cut McK with very little cost.

I disagree. He catches better than McKinley but he fails miserably at a fullback's basic job - blocking.

The day we released Mak, we suddenly became a better running team.

He's extremely bright. The fact is, he could probably make the $500K in the private sector that he currently makes on the field. He's got some solid connections, and with his educational background, could exceed what he's getting on the field.

I used to think $500K was a ton of money for a guy to make, but lately I seem to know bunches of guys in that tax backet. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have the same kind of luck when it comes to personal wealth.

Great post Skkorp!

See, I always thought that McKinley looked like a better blocker than Mackovicka in the preseason, and I always wanted to see McKinley block in the regular season.

Mackovicka is a better receiver and runner, and an intelligent hard worker type, so the coaching staff always gave him a leg up, even though he wasn't the greatest blocker. Mackovicka did improve last year as a blocker, but Hodgins is way better, and McKinley gives you a pretty good special teamer.

I know several people who have masters in Business Management, Adminstration, Marketing, and Economics, almost none of them are making close to that money. Even a few friends who went to Harvard,Yale and Notre Dame aren't making that type of coin. Maybe a few hundred grand, which is still, to me, considered very good. I do know a few very rich people but they are few and far between. Usually they started their own businesses and found the proper nitch and were highly successful, often times much of their money is tied up in their business though and would find it difficult for themselves to take home $500k a year without liquidating all of their assets first and then they they may only be able to bring home that for a couple years. Where are you meeting these people who are making that kind of income? If you look at the statisics, (which can sometimes be found with Alumni records and magazines and newspapers like Forbes and the Wall Street Journal or library records) Hardly anybody makes that kind of money with that type of degree or any type of degree for that matter. Saying that Mackovica would be making that kind of money in the private sector is a very, very, far reach.

As far as tax brackets go, at around $80,000 you can be in the highest tax bracket and you usually lose all of of your exemptions at around $150,000 to $200,000. So saying you know people in that tax bracket doesn't mean they're making $500,000. Can you tell me what some of your friends do to make that kind of money?

I just looked for some info on what Economic Degrees pay these days, being curious about how it compares to what I got a degree in and found this info as a pretty good average
% male: 85
% female: 15
average hours per week: 40
average starting salary: $ 28,500
average salary after 5 years: $ 55,000
average salary after 10 to 15 years: $ 75,000

Now graduates who had a premium education sometimes made twice this from what I read and sometimes as much as three times as much for a starting salary, but I still can't see how $500,000 a year would be common.

I sometimes think that some of you guys kind of get used to what these players make and think it's close to what people in the real world make, especially players who make close to the minimum but it really isn't.

That's why I laugh when some of these guys who have better than average contracts in the NFL (I don't mean Mackovica) say they need a really good new contract so they can provide for their family. That's just a joke, if they used their money sensibly they could easily live off of the interest for the rest of their lives although that probably wouldn't be the wisest way to go with the kind of money they make. These guys make an astounding amount of money.

Maybe the guys your looking at aren't as well connected as a former all-conference athlete, professional athlete, and well known hometown favorite (at least in some parts of the country). I can see Mak finding a nice spot to jump into should it come to that.

As for the notion that not many people are making $500K a year, your probably right if your looking at Joe Average coming out of school. I've met several Mortgage bankers that are going to do that or better this year. I have a couple of friends in network sales that will be there too. Like I said before, I'm not in that league, but I've met more people lately that are close to it, if not already there.
