A productive in-the-box middle backer who wears his heart on his sleeve. Needs to be protected because he has short arms and cannot shed blockers. He dodges blocks instead of taking them on and struggles in coverage. Gilbert has a very similar build to Cards MLB Rob Frederickson, and he may also be a half-step quicker.

Hmmm....wow, I never knew that Fredrickson was a MLB.

Hmmm....wow, I never knew that Fredrickson was a MLB.

Something like that could have been a typo though. Not defending them but it could have been.

But this brings me to something I was going to post during the draft and all. There were criticisms of the draft grades and attitudes of the Cards picks by the national media and it got me thinking. Is it just the national media doesn;t know anything about us or are some of the wounds self-inflicted media wise? Or is it a combination of both?

I think sometimes the Cards make really questionable choices and bonehead moves and then the national media blasts them for it. I also think (make that know) that the national media makes statements that clearly shows they do not know what they are talking about. Example on SportsReporters II, Trey Wingo, in discussing Emmitt signing with the Cards, said he didn;t understand because the Cards have a horrible Oline or something to that effect. Obviously he didn;t do his homework. The Cards Oline may not be the best in the league but I would argue they are probably top 10.

Anyways, just got me to thinking that sometimes the national media blasts the Cards for amount to being self-inflicted wounds

Not to mention the whole Pace debacle. Everywhere I read about him reporters were saying different things; too slow, good speed, high motor, gets tired easily, long arms, short arms, not strong enough, built very well.

None of them had probably seen Wake play (outside MAYBE the Seattle bowl last year) and yet they were just recycling the same crap they had seen someone else write-ridiculous.


Its kinda like the feeling on this board-people just bash the pick because they dont know anything about him. In subsequent days it was very suprising how many people admitted they had never watched a WF game let alone seen Calvin Pace play football!

I didn't even know Wake Forest played football until we picked Ben Coleman and Ricky Proehl (-:

I admit I'm guilty I've never seen him play and I trashed the trade and pick on Saturday.

I think it's a gut reaction it was a name nobody saw coming in that pick. NFLdraftblitz had us picking Pace in their mock draft, at #37, so I knew the name and had read a small bit but when we grabbed him at 18 I was completely blindsided.

Live and learn it sounds more and more like we made a pretty good pick.
